Market sessions and hours
Forex is open 24 hours Monday to Friday, but that doesn't mean every hour is equal. The market "breathes" following the schedule of the big financial centres. Knowing when there's activity — and when the market is dead — is one of the first things that stops bad, bored trades.
The three sessions (UTC time)
The day splits into three big sessions passing the baton around the world: Asia, London and New York. The magic happens in the London–New York overlap, when the two largest markets are open at the same time.
| Session | Approx. hours (UTC) | Character |
|---|---|---|
| 🌏 Asia (Tokyo/Sydney) | 00:00 – 09:00 | Quieter; tight ranges. Good for JPY, AUD. |
| 🌍 London | 08:00 – 17:00 | The biggest; high liquidity and volatility. Moves EUR and the pound. |
| 🌎 New York | 13:00 – 22:00 | Very active, especially at the open. Driven by the dollar and US news. |
| ⭐ London–NY overlap | 13:00 – 17:00 | Prime time: peak volume, low spreads, clean moves. |
Note: hours shift by one hour with daylight-saving changes, which don't happen on the same day in Europe and the US. Treat these bands as a reference, not to the minute.
Why this matters to you
- Volatility = opportunity and risk. The London–NY overlap has clean moves and low spreads: it's when most day systems trade. In the Asian session, many pairs barely move.
- Spread changes with the hour. Outside active hours (e.g. broker midnight, or the Sunday open) the spread spikes and can hit your stop for no apparent reason.
- Each pair has its hour. Trading EURUSD in the middle of the Asian session is usually boring and inefficient; trading it in the overlap isn't.
